Cazcanes Barrel Care & Instructions
Sanitizing & Holding Solution (For Extended Storage)
If your barrel will be stored for an extended period or requires sanitation, you can use a sulphite-citric holding solution to keep the barrel clean, swollen, and stable.
For 5L Barrels:
- ¾ tsp sulphite crystals
- ½ tsp citric acid
- 1¼ gallons water
Instructions:
- Fill the barrel completely with the solution
- Insert the bung securely
- Rotate the barrel slightly to ensure all interior surfaces are coated
- Store in a cool environment
Maintenance:
- Top off solution monthly to replace evaporation
- Rotate the barrel slightly each time to keep the bung area hydrated
- Replace the solution every 3 months
Before Reuse:
- Drain the solution completely
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water
- Fill with fresh water briefly if needed to remove any residual aroma
- Empty and refill with your next batch
Important Notes
- This solution helps maintain sanitation and prevents the wood from drying out
- It may reduce some oak intensity over time
- Always handle cleaning agents according to manufacturer guidelines
